Myself & Megan Park
ast week I was invited along to breakfast to meet Melbourne designer Megan Park at her Armadale store. It was love to see her current collection, hear the stories behind how she develops the embroidery work and just to discover all the wonderful personal touches in store.
Megan spends 2-3 months of the year in India where she has a team of manufacturers and embroiderers who work by hand to bead her designs. “Nothing is mass produced, I always design things that are collectible and you can have for years,” she told me. In particular an embroidered bustier caught my eye.
“It’s inspired by a Rajasthani marriage blanket. I’ve visited villages where women make them out of what ever they have at their disposal. They may not have a lot of money but I love that something so treasured can be made out of rags,” she said.
She has worked with her fiance so is an architect to make the shop an interior that clearly reflects what Megan Park is all about. Geoffry Nee’s paper cuts hang on the wall(he is a personal friend of the couple) and Susie Stamford’s lights and ornaments made out of sourced cut glass hang from the ceilings and walls. The space has a sort of nordic feel in that the walls and surfaces are minimal but the styling has everything from antiques to cow hide rugs.
It spelled out ‘Melbourne’ perfectly: little hidden details, found objects and of course, beautiful clothes.
These brass animal figurines feature throughout the store on handles and at the end of clothing racks. They have been sourced by stylist Susie Stamford and Megan herself.
