Megan Park is well known and loved by her local community and for good reason – she’s had her eponymous label for 26 years.
“I think one of the things that has sustained the label is that we don’t create for trends. We make timeless and modern clothes that you can wear year in year out and yeah, I just love what I do,” she told us at a recent launch of a collaboration with her longtime friend, Australian artist Tiff Manuel. While the paintings are no longer on show at the boutique (you can see them here on Tiff’s website), the store is absolutely worth a visit none the less to experience a truly Melbourne aesthetic. Wait, don’t you all wear black I hear you say?!
Well, yes, that trope is certainly true but in the past 10 years has really shifted as labels like Park’s, Gorman, Kuwaii, Nixi Killick and Lucy Folk (to name but a few!) have really cemented their presence in the industry. And while you might find a basic here and there, all labels celebrate colour and art that consumers just love.
Megan Park in particular has a global edge which is woven into the very essence of the brand. Her clothes are made my makers and artisans in India with whom she’s established long working relationships.
“You see the beads on this tassel? These were created from a workshop we established that’s taught women how to bead these small beautiful parts. We pay them fairly for their work which they can do at home if they like, and it means they can gain financial independence,” Megan tells me. Every bead and stitch is selected with care by the makers she employs, with full transparency running through her supply chain.
