Mules have undoubtably been a strong trend in footwear in the last two years, trickling down from the likes of Prada all the way to Tony Bianco on the high street. Loeffler Randal have a cult following for their pleated knot mules in the Penny and Emilia styles, with a strong resale value on sites like eBay. I actually own a pair myself (being the self respecting fashionista I am, ahem) which I’ll be showing you soon.
So why do we love mules so much? I’m convinced its the two inch heel height, like some sort of golden ratio for your heel and footbed. Not so high that you are pushed onto your toes, but high enough to give you some definition in your calves and elevate an outfit. See what I did there?
Finding myself shopping while heavily pregnant last year, a pair of polka dot mules was not on the agenda. Baby clothes and tops that were easy for nursing were top of the list – the list that went out the window when I spied these babies. I was at DFO, which is a factory outlet/discount shopping mall for those of you outside Australia. Everything, or most things are supposed to be heavily discounted as end of season stock, samples and you know, all the stuff they can’t sell in a retail store.
Imagine my delight at finding these on sale in Country Road for…$23. Correct. $23. My first thought was that there must be something wrong with them. But upon inspection I discovered that no, they had just been discounted about four times from a starting RRP of $129 and this was their final sale.
I waddled up to the counter and handed over my money quicker than Britney can do a headsnap.
Of course, I had no where to wear them, I doubted I could even balance on a two inch heel at 7.5 months pregnant. But it didn’t matter, they were mine and I felt a small jolt of joy walking out of the shop with them under my arm. Do you feel that too?
These are the ‘Naomi Mid Heel’ from Country Road, sadly now out of stock. A simple Google search for ‘polka dot mules’ returned plenty of options though.
