Hello all! Another long break from the blog for me, but here I am on the first day of spring for 2018 and it’s a lovely one at that.
I’ve just had a holiday which in the end was anything but. I had a suitcase full of outfits ready to shoot, my camera packed, and many, many sleep-ins planned but our baby girl contracted influenza on the flight and I spent the better part of two weeks nursing the poor little thing.
Expectation v.s Reality = reality won, as it always does. I’m actually being more productive now I’m back home, which makes me wonder – do we put too much expectation on things like holidays and time away? So much hung on this trip in my mind, I’d set it up to be a time to relax, create content, write, spend time with the family, endless days on the beach, whale watching and dinners by the sea.
It was frustrating in the beginning that it just wasn’t working out as I’d planned, but why did I think my life would be any different because I was in a different location? Okay, white sands and warm weather aside(!), once your child is seriously ill everything goes on hold until they’re better. And even if she’d not gotten sick, was the holiday going to change things so dramatically?
Here’s my question to you dear readers: have you even planned a holiday that didn’t work out like you thought? How did you feel about it?
Here’s a poll of some of my co-workers and what they had to say:
“I thought I would relax and things would magically fall into place. They didn’t. I got to the end of my holiday on the Sunday night before work, at my laptop sending emails at midnight to prepare for the next day.”
“Flights were cancelled but there was a volcanic eruption so perhaps we were better off staying at home!”
“You can do all the planning in the world, but when you’re travelling with kids anything could happen. Lower your expectations and you’ll enjoy every holiday from now on.”
I think the last comment rings true yes?
