Meet David Subroto. A Melbourne based label who make beautiful, screen printed silk scarves. As they tell us:
Silk is chosen as the hero fabric due to its dynamic nature, taking well to dyes and capturing the rich colours vibrantly. When draped, the material moves in a fluid motion, bringing the print to life thanks to its soft texture and organic feel. Silk looks and wears beautifully while also keeping well for years to come.
You can see the vibrancy of colour in these photos, they’re almost glowing with warmth. At 100cm x 100cm, this is a generous size considering the retail price of $99. It means you can wear it as a turban, tie to a bag, wear around your neck and shoulders or even drape over furniture. I keep looking at this style which is called ‘Jati’ and thinking that it would be beautiful draped over an occasional table with some phalaenopsis orchids perched a top.
Subroto’s love of a clean aesthetic and understated luxury led him to create the range of five designs.
I wanted to create a line of effortless luxury that you can bring to your wardrobe, home and personal style – intricate pieces that can perk up your everyday staples.
Melbourne just loves details and anything hidden, and you can definitely see it reflected in the fashion, architecture and even food we produce. These pieces could easily fit into the all-black-everything wardrobe you so often see on the streets of Melbourne. Or they could be styled in the typically quirky style of Gorman or Kinky Gerlinki, also hallmarks of our fashion identity.
I’ve written about so many independent designers over the years and I just love to discover people like David Subroto who are turning their design talent to fashion. I can see a cross over here to textiles, homewares and soft furnishings, but most of all its the highly considered aesthetic and quality that stand out. This has been made entirely by hand, and you can stride proudly down the street knowing you’re wearing a tiny piece of Melbourne and supporting independent design. Enough to make you glow.
