A wardrobe revelation occurred to me recently: I buy the same top, in different versions. All the time.
I’d hung my hand washing to dry on coat hangers off the banisters of the stairs. So far, nothing to see here. But then I realised when I sat down at my desk from afar, that I had just washed and hung five off white, boho blouses in silk or pure cotton with some form of embroidery. Five of them.
It was then I realised I simply gravitate towards the same thing. There’s a gal I follow on Instagram who basically wears different versions of a floral dress with a cinched waist. She must have a wardrobe of at least 100 frocks in various colours, but essentially the same style.
So why do we do this?
Another friend of mine wears all-black-everything, all the time. Her wardrobe basically consists of black clothing in various styles and textures, but only ever black. She’s incredible stylish, but is also resolute in her style choices.
Perhaps our wardrobe is really an expression of our personality and what we want to portray to the world. Just like how we like to have our coffee a certain way, our music tastes refine over time, so too do our wardrobe choices.
I’d like to think that I was evolved enough that I’d always try new things and adapt to trends year on year. But my little hand washing episode taught me that I’m actually quite the creature of habit.
Case in point is this beautiful blouse from Spanish label Intropia (formally Hoss Intropia). It’s got all my faves: pure cotton, pin-tucking, lace, soft boho vibe.
Will I keep buying more of the same? Probably! But they make me oh so happy and you can never have too much of a good thing, right?
