Winter time in Melbourne’s kind of a favourite with the fashion set, and I’m pretty sure I know why. I myself love it and in the main part it’s because you get to wear more clothes. Sounds a little silly when I type it, but if you love fashion, the chance to wear more of it on your person day-in-day-out is much more exciting than a slip of a summer dress.
I’m generally not envious when I see someone on Instagram in Santorini wearing a strappy frock with sandals—what’s the fun in that? I’m all about layers and accessories—think Paris in winter time.
Speaking of layers, I noted the finals of Miss Universe Australia were held last week and this means the inclusion of the swimwear round. Melissa Singer wrote a fab opinion piece about how the bikini section simply has to go, because in 2017, it adds nothing to the competition which espouses itself as “a platform for the country’s most beautiful, talented, educated and confident young women.”
A platform with which you will do what still puzzles me—you don’t need a pageant as a launching pad to do good things for the world. But given the amount time and energy spent on the juggernaut that is Miss Universe someone, somewhere thinks it’s still important.
I personally think pageants of this kind are reductive and redundant and should be scrapped all together. I simply don’t agree with the premise that it’s about choice, if this is a choice we are presenting to young women as a way to further their careers, what does that say about us as a society?
I’m off track, this was supposed to be a blog post reminiscing about the first time I went to Paris and arrived in the middle of winter, but that will have to wait for another day.
Now, where’s my coat, scarf, gloves, hat, boots….?
What I’m wearing:
Coat: Vintage – it was in storage and I pulled it out and put it in the pile for charity. Do you remember it from this post in 2014? After looking at it for a few days I put it on and changed my mind. It’s still mine, for the time being!
