What colours don’t you wear? Are there some hues that wouldn’t rate a second glance?
Mine are (and generally in this order) brown, yellow, orange, beige and most shades of green. It’s no hard and fast rule, it’s simply that I don’t like them, in particular the colour orange. I really, really don’t like it!
Bottle green was my school uniform colour and to this day, I have never bought an item of clothing in that colour. It has extended to most shades of green, except for say soft mint or maybe pistachio. I have admired from afar a deep emerald woollen coat but never tried it on, and I own an olive green military style anorak. But if you opened up my wardrobe, it’s not a colour you would see.
So, I’m standing in the queue for the change room at Savers recently, which just so happens to be next to the racks of women’s coats. I saw the lapel of this trench before I pulled it out, thinking, ‘Hmmm, that trench looks interesting, got a sort of 70s vibe going on.’ My eyes travelled down the sleeve to the button which looked a nice contrast to the olive green.
I got a couple more spots closer to the change room and decided as I was already going to try things on, I may as well grab the coat and see what happens. As it turned out, it was the only thing I bought that day, from a handful of other carefully selected clothes, all of which went back to the return rack.
Now that I’m enjoying seeing how it works with my wardrobe, I might just consider investing in a coat of the same colour I could wear for years to come.
Have you ever been surprised by trying on a new colour?
