As I am home with a newborn, I’m spending more hours of the day (and night, plenty at night!) in front of the TV. I don’t think I’ve ever watched as much TV in the last three weeks as I have in my entire life.
At an unedifying hour recently, like 2am or something, I was watching a documentary on ancient Egypt about the Pyramids of Giza and how they were aligned in a specific way to please the sun god, Ra. I’ve visited the pyramids; in fact I’ve been inside the Great Pyramid, or Pyramid of Khufu and so understand why it’s one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Similarly to when I visited Petra in Jordan not too long ago, seeing these incredible man-made structures was actually awesome in the true sense of the word. I was transported back to a time and place before machinery existed, and left with a visceral sense that the construction of these edifices was a truly monumental feat of human enterprise.
So, with the sun shining outside my window, and as I’m only able to get up to my balcony and not out and about with my tripod, I thought about the sun god Ra and pulled on this outfit. It’s actually Mexican, I bought it on Etsy years ago, originally as a dress. It’s featured on the blog plenty of times over the years as a dress, but never as an ensemble. Last summer I got sick of it not fitting correctly around the waist, so I cut it in half and made a top and skirt. I also get more wear out of it this way.
I makes me happy to wear it, particularly when the sun is shining, hopefully Ra approves too 😉
