West 48 café is exactly that: 48 Essex St, Footscray, in the heart of West Melbourne.
Set up in a suburban street, you could say they have the market cornered, their neighbours are pretty weatherboard houses lined up behind picket fences.
Be that as it may, they serve incredible coffee and food, on par with more likely suspects camped in the north of the city.
Serving All Press coffee and a breakfast and brunch menu, the café does a roaring trade on weekends with people lining up out the door. The espresso is served on a small board with a shot of mineral water on the side and the baristas did a fine job creating delicious cappuccinos and flat whites.
While these segments aren’t a space where I review food I do have to give a special mention to the meal we enjoyed – the hash brown stack with a Portobello mushroom was superb.
But back to the coffee!
The orange ceramics lend themselves perfectly to the coffee and a lot of thought has gone into how it’s served and presented. The small board for the espresso with a shot of mineral water, the cups for a flat white and even the brown apothecary jars used for water lend themselves in an understated way to the relaxed but sleek feel of West 48.
A jewel in the West’s crown? I think so!
