They call the Emirates Melbourne Cup the race that stops a nation. I’m not sure about the rest of Australia, but here in the host state Victoria, we even get a public holiday to celebrate the fact that roughly 25 horses race for three minutes late in the afternoon.
There is of course so much more to it, the history and folk lore of some of the champion horses making the pages of our history books and museum displays. It is one of the richest group one races in the world with prize money in the millions, and the fashion is of course another major draw card with international VIP’s flying in from all over the world to attend.
This year I spent time in the Lexus and Emirates marquees and was extremely lucky on Cup Day to wear Richard Nylon from The Eternal Headonist. Richard is one of Australia’s most well regarded milliners his work having graced the runways and the heads of many celebrities including Kate Bosworth and Chloë Sevigny to name but a few.
I wore a vintage Barbara Barbara dress from New York with my favourite Glomesh bag and Jo Mercer heels. You might just be able to spot my ‘Lady Melbourne’ accessories as well, can’t have anyone forget who they’re talking to now can I!!
If you’d love to see more photos of the day and the Lexus marquee just scroll down for details.
