The Quest: In need of a flattering, somewhat sexy but not too revealing one piece swimsuit.
Current Situation: Too old for itty-bitty bikini’s, too young for what Nan wears to water aerobics.
Body Shape: Totally average. Not petite, not plus size, no DD+ bust, not tall. Just your average size 10.
Range of choice: 6/10.
This is what I’ve found to be true when shopping for swimsuits: if you fit into a stereotype there is more than likely a category with your name on it. Plus size? Petite? Age 50+? (I know, I can’t believe it’s a thing either)
It seems that when it comes to shopping for bathers, most websites seem to break women down into age/body type/bust size and you shop that way. Aside from the obvious problems of labelling women’s bodies in such a way, what happens if you just don’t fit into a category? I didn’t once find categories broken down into ‘activity type’ or ‘choose your destination.’
I understand there is an obvious desire for women to deal with their insecurities while standing semi-nude on the beach, hell if I had it my way I’d be held together with gaffa tape. But it was infuriating trying to navigate these ridiculous, non-standardised categories while shopping online.
In the end I hit the shops and tried things on (people did that once upon a time) and settled on this lovely one piece from Seafolly. It’s low cut but with ruffles to conceal too much cleavage, crisscross back for support, lightly padded bust and not high cut. Perfect in my eyes.
What I did discover on my quest, however, is that there is a fabulous offering of Australian brands who manufacture here, where you can customise and, at the end of the day, make rad looking togs.
