So last night was the opening show for the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival principally sponsored by David Jones. Last year I wrote about what a yawn fest it was, and this year was a slightly better offering in that the show was opened by one of the department stores latest international offerings, Mary Katrantzou.
Attendees got to see her SS 13′ collection shown at London Fashion Week(LFW) last year, which is really quite exciting considering that most LMFF ticket holders wouldn’t have the chance to attend LFW and see the clothes come to life on the catwalk. You can read a wonderful review by Tim Blanks on Style.com.
Aside from that there really were only a couple of other stand outs in the parade, namely Camilla and Josh Goot. Understanding we are watching the staple of designers that David Jones has on offer, and that this is a consumer based event after all, I still felt as though at times I was just watching a glossy catalogue bought to life.
Had I paid the $75 ticket price to be there last night I may have been a little disappointed in seeing jeans and tees stroll past in between the work of international designers like Katrantzou. While perfectly styled, it was all over the place jumping from menswear, casual and ready to wear to evening wear and limited edition show pieces. The perfect consumer catalogue really with something for everyone. Which is the point…right?
