“To go from where I was to where I am today has been a massive journey and to finally see my creations on the catwalk a wonderful achievement,” so says Tovah Cottle whose story will feature on tonight’s episode of Australian Story.
Cottle’s life so far is extraordinary to say the least- her modelling career began as a 14-year-old school girl, she was a heroin addict at 16, an international model at 17, convicted of drug and armed robbery offences in her early 20s and imprisoned before embarking on a fledgling fashion career at 30.
“I think it is important for people to see how addiction can really affect anyone but more importantly for people caught in addiction to know that there is a way out. I have the benefit of being able to tell my story and hopefully give some hope to people that no matter what difficulties you go through, you can overcome them to discover and follow your true passion and dreams, “ she says.
Cottle’s runway debut at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia earlier in May has been well received across the industry. Having collaborated with German artist Holger Lippmann she showed that her strength lies in sport-luxe and strongly constructed elements, paired with soft silks in pastel tones. It would over simplify things to say ‘tough on the outside, soft on the inside,’ but there are elements of the inner strength Cottle must have summoned in order for her to survive addiction, prison and recovery expressed throughout the collection.
“When I am designing, the woman I have in mind is very strong and I want my garments to empower her. By knowing my full story, I hope my customers feel even more empowered.”
Australian Story airs tonight at 8pm AEST on ABC 1.
