It was impossible for me to get my picture taken tonight so I’ve recreated what it might have looked like if I’d been sitting at a fashion show, complete with flash lighting which I a/ don’t really like and b/never use. However I thought my outfit was worth capturing as it was worn to kick off the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival(LMFF) for 2011.
The official program tells us that Fashion Full Stop showcasing decades of Australian fashion was going to be “part runway, part rock concert and part theatrical spectacular.” It would be fair to say that although there was a ‘runway'(some might call it a stage) it was very much presented in the style of a rock concert and if you followed my tweets, reminded me of a Rock Eistedford a la 1999.
Taking into account that it was touted as such I do understand what LMFF was trying to achieve. Perhaps it was because I was so far away from the stage but I found it hard to interpret and the sheer amount of dancing unnecessary.
I was invited to a new media/bloggers briefing last week and got a behind-the-scenes look at the clothes that had been collected from people all over Australia in order to present decades of Australian fashion all on the one catwalk. I can tell you that it was breath taking as someone who lives and breathes in vintage and second hand clothes every day. I would have loved to have seen it presented with a slower and different approach(it was interesting to note that the only time the models stopped on the catwalk was for the David Jones collection, who was one of the major presenting partners of the event).
All done and dusted it was a new approach to presenting LMFF that I haven’t experienced before in years of attending fashion week and I hope it signals that no matter how it’s represented, there is plenty more fashion to come this week.
